I was inspired the other night by my youngest son, Austin. We were sitting at the table and he asked me and Beth to help him remember some popular sayings, such as "sticks and stones..." So, we had a fun time brainstorming. He then began tweaking them and turning them on their heads - like, "April showers bring mud puddles..." and stuff like that - it was hilarious! He is apparently in the process of writing some sort of humorous story - I can't wait till it's finished.
The cool thing.....it's SUMMERTIME folx! Yep - he's writing a story, because he wants to. He came up with a creative idea on his own - and decided to write a story. He was really into it too - so much so that I had to be a wet blanket and make him go off to bed - he was still working on it late last night. Pretty cool stuff.
So, next time people talk about how messed up the next generation is, just remember that there are still some creative 10-year-olds out there who enjoy thinking creatively and have the discipline to challenge themselves even though they don't have to. If this is the case, then I'd venture to say the future is in good hands.
Just thought I'd share.

Something I have come to realize, and accept...
Soo, due to circumstances somewhat beyond my control, I got to drive our "other" car yesterday and today. Don't get me wrong, I think it's nice. There's great visibility, fairly good accelleration and it get's in the low 20's mileage-wise. Also, the sliding doors on each side are rather convenient, and the sound system is pretty good for being stock.

It's just that I have become a total soccer-mom in the process. I have had a couple of conversations with other "soccer mom's" extolling the virtues of our Dodge Grand Caravan - with the sliding doors on each side, and what great cargo space! No joke! Ladies have said - "Great van isn't it?" Yep. It's great being a 39 year old dad.

Happy 4th!!!!!!!!
Soo, today we once again celebrate our freedom from the tyranny of British rule. Many people will go to the beach, the lake, and have backyard BBQ's.
Today, we grilled out
at my son Darian's place - his treat. We were joined by his "friend" Rachel and her parents. Had a great time - and the burgers weren't bad either.

Also - very important news here - I made home-made Ice Cream with my new-found trusty "old" Home-made Ice Cream Maker - strawberry to be precise. It was just de-lish.
In other news: Joey Chestnut held onto the Nathan's hot dog eating contest title defeating Kobayashi in overtime! Every year they do this big contest at Nathan's at Coney Island N.Y. The "athletes" compete for the coveted Yellow Mustard Belt. Kobayashi had won for 6 years straight. Read my take on the whole thing from last year's post here.
What a great country we live in.

Rites of passage...
So, we've been busy lately. Here's what's been happening.
Bryce, my #3 son (in age only) "graduated" from the 6th grade. I have often wondered why we celebrate something that isn't really such a milestone - but I felt proud as a dad that he had "made it" that far. It made me reflect on what I was feeling when I was his age. In my house we have a saying - you're a little kid until you get hair under your arms. Kind of crude, yes - but think about it for a minute. (yes, we're a house full of boys - with one lonely girl - mom, who is woefully outnumbered and sometimes overwhelmed with foot odor and flatulence.) I digress.

I remember "finally" getting out of the 6th grade and feeling at last, I was no longer a little kid. Pretty heady stuff - and very exciting. I remember another thing happening as well - I got "promoted" into Youth group at church. I remember my first time at Jr. High Summer camp, and my first youth All-nighter. It was awesome. I felt like I had finally arrived!
My son Bryce had his first Wednesday nite in Youth group and is leaving for Jr. High Summer camp this afternoon. I'm sure he'll do fine, but I'm a little choked up.

We had another event recently as well. Cameron (son #2) had his own little "rite of passage" - he's been shaving since he was 11 or 12 so he's past all that - but he got his driver's license the same week as graduation.
He has also started a full-time summer job, (where I work), opened a bank account and bought some new clothes. Ah, to have "disposable" income again.....what would that be like? Maybe he'll be nice and pitch in for gas next week.....hmmm.
And lastly Darian, our eldest, Graduated from High School May 30th and promtly moved into his own apartment a few blocks away. What I find disturbing is that he left a bunch of stuff in his room and hasn't come back to clean it up so we can use it! It also seems like we have seen more of him lately than we did prior to when he moved out.

I have had parents at church ask me how I did it - got him to move out that is? I don't know! He just started looking for an apartment a couple of months before school got out and "voila!" he was moving in the week after graduation. He'll be going to Illinois College in town for a couple of years and then the plan is to transfer to Edwardsvill to finish up an engineering degree. I never got past high school algebra, but that is a story for another day. Darian - we're proud of you, but could you come get the rest of your stuff out of your old room?
So, you can see, it is bittersweet seeing your sons grow up.

Father's Day
Happy Father's Day 2 me! Church was cool today - great message about fathers, failure and forgiveness. My wife, Beth had been away for 2 whole days - she was in St. Louis for a women's conference. She came home right after we got back from church. Happy me! Though I wanted to spend the afternoon cleaning before she got back, the house wasn't actually bombed that terribly. (We must not have had that much fun this time while she was out......)

Fun Day!
Soo, we are once again covered in snow. There's a good 10-14 inches out there. I thought I'd point out a simple bit of irony most of you are famliar with. You see, my kids have a snow day - a day off from school, and you guessed it - today was supposed to be my F
riday off!

Why do I rant about this? I don't really know, except that I do sometimes enjoy some moments to myself - some peace and quiet if you will. That being said, I also love my boys and enjoy spending time with them- so, we had some fun today. Most notably, we played a lot of playstation, and we made a snowman - sort of. It was a really dry powdery snow, and it wouldn't pack - could hardly make a snowball that would go more than 5 feet. (Where's a mountain and a ski lift when you need one?)
By the way, when there's snow on the ground, nothing beats a Jeep Wrangler, they are soo choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
Back to the story...Our snowman looked more like a big lumpy blob - so we named him - 'Jabba the Snowman' - cute ain't he?

Well, off to be a dad again. Time to make some hot cocoa!

The Joys of Fatherhood...
Just thought I'd share a few photos with you all to illustrate what a joy it is for me to be a parental unit (sometimes). Actually, I wouldn't trade a minute of it! (Well, maybe a few hours here and there, but you know what I mean folks.) Enjoy the pics, and of course my loving, fatherly commentary.

As you know, Teenagers are always especially cheerful in the morning! I don't remember Darian's exact words when the flash went off, but I'm sure they brightened everyone's day, as usual.

The fact is, I have had a hard time finding a picture of him to share with you all without some sort of gesture, "face" or otherwise non-serious behavior from him. We don't actually know what his real face looks like - though we do know he has blonde hair and steel blue eyes.

BTW, the sign he is flashing with his hand is the Rock and Roll "secret" devil sign. Shhh...don't tell anyone.

I guess that means he's only cut 15 others in his lifetime.....??? I didn't know we had been counting exactly how many cakes he had been been allowed to cut but it must be serious business if we are keeping track. After all, those cake knives can be pretty sharp! By the way, Happy 16th Birthday Cameron!

This is Darian waking up!

Austin is a very serious individual, especially when taking a picture.

Busy days off...
Soo... this is my weekend off. Yep. Yesterday went down like this. I get up VERY early these days (more on that later). I was in the shower by 6am. At 7 I dropped Beth off at work, then went with Austin and Bryce to their school for "Donuts with Dad" - cool! Of course, they were having a book fair in the computer center right next to the donuts and coffee - ($$$$$$$).
At 8 I came back and picked up Darian and Cameron to take them to the dentist - in Springfield. No cavities or other surprises ($$$$$$) thank you Lord! Since they were missing school and their regular lunch period, we stopped and got double bacon burger combos from Wendy's. (If you can find a greasier sandwich, you're in Mexico!) This is a picture of Cameron at Wendy's - "Look ma, no cavities!"
I then got to spend money on a new big fat knobby tire for my Jeep ($$$$$$$) - we had a flat Thursday. I am also changing the brakes - so I went and bought them too ($$$$$$). I then went to Home depot and a couple of other hardware stores to get more stuff for our basement project. (more $$$$$$$$). All told I was home for just a few minutes to walk the dog before I went back out and picked Beth up from work. Whew!!!! What a long - busy tedious EXPENSIVE day!
Today - (Saturday) it is cold and drizzly (kind of a spitty rain). I was up early again - then napped - then rushed out for Austin's final soccer game. Because of the rain - and a short roster for both teams (due to the cold rain I'm sure) they played short halves. Austin's team went scoreless, but gave up three. For that reason, we were glad it was short. Kind of a bummer to have the final game in the cold rain - and with a loss. Too bad for our team - but perhaps they will do better this spring.
Austin saw quite a bit of action today. He does a great job as defender and is great at tackling the ball from other players. He is also very good at passing the ball to his teammates. We are very proud of him.
I am now off to work on our basement - the plan is to finish up with the drywall and taping this weekend. This includes some duct work and more (minor) electrical. I also need to change the brakes on the jeep - maybe it will warm up some later.

Senior Night...

We just got back from a very brutal, very chilly soccer game. It was senior night - a night in which they honor the seniors and their parental units (us).
We played a brutal game against Lanphier HS (Northeast Springfield). It wasn't a very good game, kinda one-sided. We won 7 - 0. Darian scored TWO - the first one was a quick header on a cross. The second (just two minutes later) was a beautiful bend from the right side of the goal - we where like - did it go in?????? Wow!
The other team barely had the ball the whole night. Like I said - brutal. Not a great game, but beautiful goals. It got to be embarrassing. The IHSA rules specify when the point spread is 7 or more leading into the second half, they cut the time from 40 to 20 minutes. Needless to say, they shortened the game - and then we brought in our junior varsity team for most of the 2nd half play. Like I said, brutal. We had a scoreless second half - but so did Lanphier - (against our freshmen and sophomores.)
Hey, at least we won our last home game! I'll have pics to share soon!

A Fun Day for US!
We ditched church today and went instead to a good ol' fashioned corn maze!
For my west coast friends - yep' - it's a big ol' maze cut into a cornfield. You get to pay big money to go through it too! But hey - we had fun! Here's some pics.

Birthday Cards Are For the Weak...
It is officially Birthday season (First Austin, then Beth), and today is my son Darian's B-day!
I sat down to write something profound in his birthday card and honestly couldn't quite come up with anything. For those who regularly read this blog you know that it's usually no trouble for me to come up with at least a few words. But, as I sat there, pondering I honestly couldn't summon the words to describe my feelings for him.
It started when I went shopping for the right card to get him. There was the usually mushy stuff - "Son, you're the greatest! .... blah, blah, blah..." How do they come up with this awful stuff?
Then there were the light-hearted, humorous cards. The ever-popular money holder is always a big hit. I settled on a somewhat funny one about all of a son's great qualities - on the inside of course, it said he must take after his parents.
The short story is this - I really hate greeting cards. What are they really? You are paying between $2 - $5 for somebody else to give you some "nice" words to say on a special occasion.
On a whole, we as a society have become a bunch of inarticulate wimps who are unable to communicate our feelings in any meaningful way. Simply put - we aren't very good at telling those we love that we do in fact "love" them. We have to pay somebody else to do it for us - in the form of a "greeting card". (That's why I always buy blank one's to give to my wife!)
Profound wasn't it. Deep. Meaningful. Eloquent. Yep, summed it all up right there.
So, what does "Wow" mean? Well, it means a lot! For me, Beth, the whole family! Please indulge me as I publicly brag on my son. Here's what "Wow"means - I think you will all agree:
Darian -
Wow! I can't believe that it's already been seventeen years since you were born! Do you have any idea how young, naive and scared we were as parents bringing you into this world, and home from the hospital to our little two-bedroom condo??????
Wow! You are a senior in high school now! You've got your whole life ahead of you - all kinds of opportunity awaits you! You're going to be out on your own soon.
Wow! You are taking calculus?????? I'm not even sure if I spelled it right! That would explain the rather expensive graphing calculator we just bought you. Seriously though, you have every right to succeed in life if you work hard for it. You have the talent, the ability, the discipline and the brains to do it.

(Darian with cousin Allison)
Wow! You are a really talented guy! You were the first to score a goal in the very first game of the soccer season - a beautiful header! And you scored again two games later! (You aren't going to be a ball-hog this season, are you?) Let's not forget that you are also becoming an excellent musician!

Wow! We are very proud of you for many of your accomplishments - but most of all, we thank God that you have become a young man of integrity. You have evidenced a deep faith in God, and you have proven to us as your parents that we can trust you to be honest and responsible.

(Darian with his "friend" Rachael)
What else can I say? Wow!
Love, Dad

Sunburn, Football & "Vanilla"
Sooo....
Busy day today!
We watched Bryce's first football game (they lost 12 - 8) - they did well all things considered. Very hot out. We all got some sun.

BIG NEWS ALERT!!!!
Today is Austin's 9th birthday - we got him a hamster cage and all the trimmings. Not much fun looking at an empty cage though - sure they're fun, and we can spin the wheel and all - but still...
So, we stopped off at the pet shop on the way back from the game and picked out our newest member of the family - May we present: Vanilla, "The Wonder Hamster" (Tada!)

Bye for now. (Yes, hamsters do smell bad!)

Just a quickie...
Hello there everyone!
Just thought we'd share a brief moment in the life of our son Bryce who just recently started playing a particular sport. Enjoy the pics!
They're just now practicing - but he sez' his coaches want to put him at Wide Receiver. (Whatever that means!)

Isn't he a right handsome wee devil?

Fishing Fun!
Just a quick note - went catfishing with my son Cameron & good buddy Mike K. Cameron & I both got skunked. Mike (of course) caught 2. They just weren't really biting like usual. Last time we went to the same pond we had 20+ fish between three guys in about two hours.
Mike gave 'em to me, cause he's somewhat retired, gets to fish all the time, and had no more room in his freezer. I gladly accepted and just got through cleaning them. Here's a pic of what your average central Illinois farm pond channel cat looks like just before excecution.

He was just over 19in. I didn't weigh him. - yes, he's average - to somewhat small for that pond.
I have personally pulled out fish from that pond that wouldn't fit head to tail in my sink - head out one side, tail out the other - no lie! I had heard about such things from people who fished the California Aquaduct - never saw it personally though.
Well, enough braggin for one night. More to resume tomorrow.

Father -Son Time...
So, I went fishing today with my youngest son, Austin. Our church had a father-son fishing thingy with the Royal Rangers. Some nice folks at our church have a little (4-acre) pond/lake that they open up from time to time. We ended it with a gool ol' fashioned fish fry. (Stuffed myself I did!)
There were about 20 or so boys and a bunch of dads and other guys from the church. Me and Austin befriended another boy who was there solo. I spent much of the day untangling, re-tying and baiting, re-baiting, showing how to bait, giving casting lessons - you know what I mean. All-in-all we had a pretty cool time though.

Here is an un-doctored pic of a really nice Red-ear (blue-gill hybrid) I hooked today. No, they aren't normally that big - this one looks to be slightly more than 9 inches (my hand is 8in. +). This one was much thicker than my hand too. Normally a "big one" is about 6 - 8 Inches.
Not that catching a blue-gill is such a great feat - we usually throw 'em back - but just wanted to show people (especially in Cali.) that yes, the rumors are true about farm ponds out here! You probably won't catch anything like this at Apollo Park (wink wink). Just wait till I go catfishing next week!

Don't mean to brag, but...
Hey - guess who's got some talented kids.....me!
Just thought I'd share a couple of pics from tonites' piano recital.
Enjoy!

Here's Bryce - he played a couple of great songs including Kum-By-Yah and Bless the Lord... Handsome fella, isn't he?

Austin wowed the crowd with an awesome version of Malaguena(sp?) - doesn't he look serious though?
